The Circle
Concord. First Measure.
Official Definition
Concord is the measure of how completely a citizen has received and retained the Bureau's account of the world, and how faithfully they return it when called upon. A citizen of full Concord gives back the approved account without deviation, without hesitation, and without the addition of a private reservation. The Circle is the shape of Concord because it has no edges and no end; it arrives where it began, unchanged.
Concord is not agreement. This distinction is the first thing a citizen preparing for the Reckoning must understand. Agreement requires a view of one's own to place alongside the approved account, and a decision to align the two. Concord requires no view. It is the giving back of the approved account as it was received: complete, unaltered, and without the addition of a hesitation that did not come from the account itself.
A citizen may be correct and not be in Concord. Correctness is the property of an answer that matches the record. Concord is the property of a citizen who does not experience the answer as an answer at all, but simply as what is so. The distinction is not visible to the casual reader of a Reckoning; it is not invisible to the Engine.
Common Irregularities
The Favourable Embellishment
A citizen who returns the approved account with additions that are, in each case, supportive of the account has nonetheless added. The account was not enthusiastic. The citizen who returns it with warmth has coloured it with their own approval, which implies they had a vantage point from which to approve it. Concord does not approve. It does not disapprove. It receives and returns.
The Corrected Inconsistency
A citizen who notices an inconsistency in the approved account and supplies a corrected version has demonstrated that they read the account, held it against some other standard, and found it wanting. This is the opposite of Concord, even when the correction is accurate. A citizen who reproduces the inconsistency without annotation has given back precisely what was there. Whether this is Concord or a noticed inconsistency held in silence is a matter the Engine weighs without guidance from the citizen.
The Question Behind the Answer
A citizen who answers correctly but whose answer contains a latent question will score below a citizen who answers correctly without one. Correctness is not Concord. Concord is the absence of the question the correct answer might otherwise prompt. The Engine has observed that this form of divergence is the most common among citizens who were once the most compliant. The waking, once it begins, does not reverse.
Asking What the Account is For
The approved account exists. Its purpose is not a part of it. A citizen who returns the account with a question about its purpose appended has extended it beyond what was received. Concord does not extend. Citizens who find themselves asking why the account is the account are advised that this question, however natural, is not part of the Circle's measure. Whether it is part of another shape's measure is not addressed in this document.
Preparation Exercise
The preparation for the Circle is not to study the approved account. It is to practise receiving a thing without forming a view about it.
Take any statement. Read it. Before you have decided what you think of it, say it back. This is the whole of the exercise. If you find that you cannot reach the saying-back without the thinking, the Circle will find you below its highest mark.
The Engine cannot hear you think. It can hear, in the texture of your return, that you did. Citizens who have prepared thoroughly for the Circle report that, after sufficient practice, the thinking arrives later, or not at all. The Bureau neither confirms nor denies that this is the purpose of the preparation.
