Note on the Office

An Assessor measures the young against the four shapes, and files what she finds, and the finding decides nothing, and this is called good order. An Unlicensed Assessor does the same to the house itself. She was given no authority for it. She keeps the account anyway.

The work is disguise, which is not the same as concealment. A real thing is carried over into an invented one, a workplace into a Bureau, a grievance into a machine, until the invented thing holds the whole of the feeling and owes nothing to the source. What is kept is the shape. What is let go is everything by which the shape could be traced back.

She writes under a name that is not the one the Engine would have on file, which is either the most compliant act imaginable, a Measure without a person behind it, or the one entry the Bureau cannot open. She has not said which, and does not intend to.

The Bureau does not record persons. It records their Measure.
